Can Eyelid Surgery Improve My Vision? By dsherris on January 10, 2024

As we age, the delicate skin of the upper eyelids can begin to droop. This not only has cosmetic effects. In advanced cases, it can impact your field of vision. If you’re wondering whether eyelid surgery can improve your vision, the answer is a resounding yes. Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, is a very common procedure at my BuffaloNY, plastic surgery office. In this article, I’ll discuss why your vision is affected, how blepharoplasty can help, and other related topics.

Drooping Eyelids and Your Vision

Sagging skin on the upper eyelids narrows your field of vision. More specifically, it obscures the upper portion of your peripheral vision. This can make a range of activities more difficult and tiring including reading and driving. You might find yourself lifting your chin, rubbing your eyes, or engaging in other habits to try and offset this effect. It’s important to keep in mind that in pronounced cases, a narrower field of vision can even make certain activities unsafe and hamper your independence.

How Blepharoplasty Can Help

During blepharoplasty surgery, skin that comes down too far over your eye will be removed. Though swelling will take some time to fully subside, patients can expect to immediately enjoy a larger field of vision.

A Closer Look at the Procedure

Before the procedure, anesthesia will be administered to ensure your comfort. Once you’re sedated, an incision will be concealed in the natural folds of the upper eyelid skin. Excess skin is then carefully trimmed away on the upper eyelids and the underlying tissue is tightened. Fat deposits may be removed as well. Then, sutures are carefully applied. Patients are then typically seen about one week after the procedure to check on the healing process and remove stitches.

Combining Upper and Lower Eyelid Surgery

The lower eyelids are also prone to the effects of aging but in different ways. You might develop puffiness or bags under your eyes. In other cases, patients develop deep hollows and their eyes take on a bruised appearance. I’ll often recommend treating both the upper and lower eye area at the same time for complete rejuvenation, comprehensive, natural-looking results and a decreased recovery time.

Benefits of Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid surgery’s functional benefits can greatly increase your quality of life. You might find yourself enjoying hobbies you haven’t picked up in years and having a greater appreciation for the little things, like a beautiful sunset.

At the same time, eyelid surgery has undeniable cosmetic benefits. Many of our Buffalo patients are surprised at how much younger they look after the procedure. Their friends and family often comment they look more alert and awake and generally have a more open, friendly expression.
