Eyelid Surgery for Droopy Eyelids By dsherris on August 13, 2019

Woman before and after eyelid surgeryThe skin around the eyes is thinner and more delicate than other facial skin, so many people notice that it begins to show signs of aging earlier than the rest of the face. Loose, droopy skin tends to be a particular concern around the eyelid area.

At our Buffalo, NY, plastic surgery practice, Dr. David A. Sherris can perform eyelid surgery for droopy eyelids. Eyelid surgery lifts and tightens the skin around the upper and lower lids to minimize the signs of aging and restore a more youthful and refreshed appearance.

Candidates

Eyelid surgery may be a good option for anyone who feels like heavy or droopy eyelids have left them looking aged beyond their years. Eyelid surgery is a highly customizable procedure, and it can address a wide range of aesthetic and functional concerns, including:

  • Low, heavy upper eyelids
  • Obstructed vision due to droopy upper eyelids
  • Puffy undereye bags
  • Lack of an upper eye crease
  • An overall tired or worn-down appearance
  • Lines, wrinkles, or creases along the upper or lower eyelid area

As long as patients are in good overall health, free of conditions that could increase the risk of surgery, and have realistic expectations for the results of treatment, they should be ideal candidates for eyelid surgery.

The Procedure

Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is an outpatient procedure. This means that our Buffalo patients return home the same day of treatment, after a brief recovery period. Patients must have a friend or loved one to drive them home because of the anesthesia that is used.

When performing eyelid surgery, Dr. Sherris will make an incision along the upper or lower eyelid, depending on each patient’s unique needs. For upper eyelid treatment, Dr. Sherris will make an incision along the fold of the eyelid so that any resulting scar is hidden in the natural crease of the eyelid. For lower eyelid surgery, Dr. Sherris will either create an incision inside the lower eyelid or just beneath the lower eyelash line.

Once incisions are made, Dr. Sherris can alter the appearance of the eyelids by removing excess skin, muscle, and fat or by moving fat to smooth out hollows. The adjustments are made to lift, smooth, and tighten the skin along the lower or upper eyelids. This minimizes the signs of aging and produces a more youthful and refreshed appearance.

Benefits of Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid surgery benefits our Buffalo patients in a number of ways. Most notably, eyelid surgery provides a more rested and refreshed appearance. The results of eyelid surgery increase a person’s confidence by making their outer appearance more closely reflect the way they feel on the inside.

Another advantage of eyelid surgery is that the results of treatment are long-lasting. Patients who undergo eyelid surgery do not need regular touch-ups, which are required to maintain the results of many other cosmetic treatments.

Finally, eyelid surgery requires a fairly short recovery period, when compared to some other plastic surgery procedures. Stitches are typically removed within a few days, and most patients are ready to return to work and other routine activities in about seven to 10 days.
