More Information About Eyelid Surgery  Which Type of Eyelid Surgery is Right for You?

Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) can offer significant cosmetic benefits for those patients whose eyelids droop and cause them to appear sad, angry, or tired. Dr. David Sherris performs blepharoplasty to remove sagging, loose skin around the eyes. For the lower eyelids, he sometimes employs an advanced method that prevents visible scarring and stitching or repositions the natural fat pad. Eyelid surgery can also address the functional problem of loose upper eyelids, which can impair vision and cause discomfort.

Dr. Sherris will perform your blepharoplasty in one of three ways: standard eyelid surgery, transconjunctival eyelid surgery, or by using the pinch technique. After a personal eyelid surgery consultation and discussion, Dr. Sherris will decide which method is most appropriate for the treatment of your individual needs. Most people return to work within a week of surgery. Full recovery within weeks to months depending on how advanced the eyelid procedure is. We provide eyelid surgery to residents of Buffalo, Rochester, Niagara Falls, and the surrounding areas who desire treatment from one of the premier facial plastic surgeons in the region.

There are various types of eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) available to meet the diverse needs of patients. At the Buffalo practice of the Clinic of Facial Plastic Surgery, we specialize in treatment of the face, including the eyelids and have extensive experience with all types of blepharoplasty procedures. If your eyes droop, you have conspicuous under eye bags, suffer from puffy eyelids, or appear older than you actually are because of sagging upper or lower eyelids, you may benefit from cosmetic surgery. If you have considered undergoing eyelid surgery to revitalize your appearance and regain your youthful look, we can answer any questions you may have regarding your blepharoplasty options. Please contact our Buffalo plastic surgery practice today to schedule a consultation with Dr. David Sherris.

Upper Eyelid Surgery

If the upper eyelids are sagging excessively or are puffy and inflated as a result of excess fat tissue, it can negatively impact a person's appearance, self-esteem, and confidence. With upper eyelid surgery, excess skin and fat tissue can be removed and the remaining skin of the upper eyelid can be re-positioned and elevated so that it appears healthier and more youthful. To minimize or eliminate visible scarring, the incision will typically be placed in the natural upper crease of the eyelid.

Lower Eyelid Surgery

Puffy or sagging lower eyelids, as well as stubborn fat deposits, can be corrected through lower eyelid surgery. After making an incision directly beneath the lower eyelash so that it is hidden from sight, excess skin can be removed and fat tissue re-positioned to produce a more even, uniform youthful appearance. In minor cases a transconjunctival incision inside the lower eyelid may be used for those patients with no sagging skin but a little puffy fat deposit which is removed for a smooth appearance. The specific scope of the procedure will depend on the client's wishes as well as the extent of his or her eyelid droop. Lower eyelid surgery can have a dramatic effect on a person's appearance.

Eyelid Surgery to Improve Vision

Though upper eyelid blepharoplasty is often used for cosmetic purposes, in some cases, it can be employed to improve a person's vision. In extreme cases, drooping or saggy upper eyelids can actually hinder a person's peripheral vision by blocking their field of view. In such cases, the excess skin and fat tissue can be removed and the remaining skin can be re-draped so that it both improves the patient's appearance and their peripheral vision. If your vision is partially blocked as a result of excessively sagging eyelids, eyelid surgery for improved vision may be an option.

Look More Alert & Youthful

Blepharoplasty can be performed on the upper or lower eyelids to remove wrinkled or sagging skin. Undergoing eyelid surgery can help you look more awake and make putting on makeup easier. With over 15 years of experience, Dr. Sherris can perform precise, flattering eyelid surgery.

Blepharoplasty

Standard eyelid surgery is an appropriate solution for patients whose lower and/or upper eyelids droop and sag because of excess eyelid skin. As we age, our skin begins to lose its elasticity because the protein that makes up its underlying support structures is produced in fewer quantities. This process can be even more evident in the eye region because eyelid skin is the thinnest on the body. In the capable hands of a skilled professional like Dr. David Sherris, blepharoplasty is a safe procedure that can produce long-lasting results and leave virtually undetectable scars. Most patients can return to work seven days after the procedure. The full recovery period may end after several weeks, at which time the full benefits of your new youthful and refreshed appearance can be enjoyed. Eyelid surgery is often combined with a brow lift for even more dramatic facial rejuvenation. If you are interested in eyelid surgery and live in the Buffalo , Niagara Falls, Rochester or out of state areas, we would be happy to see you for a consultation. Transconjunctival Eyelid Surgery

Transconjunctival eyelid surgery is performed to remove excess fat from the lower eyelids that causes the face to look tired and old. The procedure is most effective for patients who do not have excess eyelid skin but have developed some puffiness, most often due to heredity. This type of eyelid surgery has a number of benefits. For one, Dr. Sherris makes the incision on the inside of the lower eyelid to avoid any visible scarring. In addition, the results of transconjunctival eyelid surgery are permanent; the excess fat does not return. Swelling may persist for a few weeks after the procedure, but most patients are able to return to work within seven to ten days of the surgery. For more information on how you can enjoy the benefits of younger-looking eyes with transconjunctival eyelid surgery, please contact our Buffalo practice today.

Pinch Technique

To correct minor sagging caused by excess skin in the upper or lower eyelid, Dr. Sherris performs "pinch technique" eyelid surgery at his Buffalo practice. The pinch technique is appropriate for younger patients who do not need to correct puffy eye bags or other conditions associated with age but just have the early signs of aging and minor loose skin. This method is less invasive than other forms of eyelid surgery, does not take as long to recover from, and many times can be performed in-office with local anesthesia. For more information on pinch technique eyelid surgery, please contact our practice serving Buffalo, Rochester Niagara Falls, and all of western New York.

Fat Transposition

Fat transposition is where Dr. Sherris takes the natural fat pad that has moved with age and flips it back to get rid of bags and puffiness. You never want to remove the fat pad unless the patient is a candidate for Transconjuctival eyelid surgery.
