Forehead Lift with Botox or Surgery: Which Is Right For Me? By dsherris on July 23, 2023

woman with forehead wrinklesFacial skin frequently starts to sag and develop wrinkles much earlier than most people anticipate. It is especially common for individuals to notice wrinkles across the forehead, frown lines between the eyes, and droopy eyebrows.

Many people come to Dr. David A. Sherris’ facial plastic surgery center to discuss cosmetic treatment for forehead wrinkles and saggy brows. A brow and forehead lift smooths and tightens facial skin, but our BuffaloNY, patients can achieve the revitalizing results of a forehead lift with BOTOX or surgery. Dr. Sherris is happy to help patients better understand each procedure and which one may be better suited to their unique needs and desires.

Forehead Lift Through BOTOX

It is common for people to assume that plastic surgery is the only way to effectively eliminate facial wrinkles, but many respond well to BOTOX treatment. BOTOX is a cosmetic injectable that softens and smooths facial skin by targeting the muscles responsible for wrinkles. BOTOX contains a diluted version of the botulinum toxin, which temporarily paralyzes muscles to prevent contractions.

During a BOTOX procedure, Dr. Sherris makes several injections around the treatment site. Injections are made with a small needle, so discomfort is minimal. A BOTOX procedure usually takes just 10 to 15 minutes. BOTOX is a minimally invasive solution for wrinkles around the forehead, eyes, and brow line.

BOTOX Candidates

BOTOX may be an appropriate solution for individuals with dynamic wrinkles across the forehead. Dynamic wrinkles are caused by repeated muscle contractions commonly associated with facial expressions. BOTOX candidates must be in good overall health and have realistic expectations for treatment. BOTOX provides more subtle results than surgery and treats only dynamic wrinkles; it does not address loose, saggy skin.

Forehead Lift Through Surgery

Forehead or brow lift surgery addresses more advanced forehead wrinkles, deep-set creases, and a droopy brow line. During forehead lift surgery, Dr. Sherris moves the brow into the correct position. In a woman it should sit above the bony ridge or brow bone above the eye. In a man the brow sits on the bony ridge and is lower. Brow lift surgery opens the eye area creating a more youthful appearance and eliminating the tired angry appearance many patients complain about.

A forehead lift can be performed endoscopically (via tiny incisions and a small surgical camera) or with a traditional incision across the forehead. Both techniques require recovery time for tissues to heal and side effects such as bruising and inflammation to resolve. The endoscopic technique however is less invasisve and has a quicker recovery.  After recovery, surgical results are significant. A forehead lift eliminates wrinkles and creases and raises the brow line, taking years off our Buffalo patients’ appearance.

When to Consider Surgical Treatment

While BOTOX offers sufficient results for some of our Buffalo patients who have early signs of aging, others are better suited for surgical treatment. Surgery is appropriate for more advanced aging when the brow is sagging causing both wrinkles, lowering of the brow and many times heaviness of the upper eyelids. As with BOTOX, patients must be in good overall health to be considered ideal candidates for a forehead lift and have realistic expectations for treatment results.
