For patients seeking a more balanced facial appearance, as well as those with weak chins, recessed chins or who desire for a more defined chin that features more prominently in their look, chin augmentation - through the use of facial surgery and facial implants can provide the solution. It is not uncommon to combine chin augmentation with rhinoplasty. When Dr. Sherris evaluates a patient for rhinoplasty he is also looking at the balance and harmony of the overall face and many times chin augmentation is the component that will complete overall harmony. A weak chin also can make a large nose look more prominent.
Chin implant surgery involves the insertion of an artificial implant, typically made from GORE-TEX® (polytetrafluoroethylene), in front of the jaw bone. A small incision is made under the chin in order to insert the implant. This also allows any resulting scarring to be hidden from view. Once the implant is in position, it will be sutured into place with dissolvable sutures, which are typically absorbed in approximately 10 days. The chin will be dressed with a tape dressing for a week and the sutures under the chin where the incision was made are removed at a week. Chin implants come in a variety sizes and are customized to the patient.
At our Buffalo practice, we are well versed in a multitude of facial procedures and can determine the best treatment option for our patients based on their needs; chin augmentation is the single most effective way of defining the shape and size of the chin, and we have witnessed firsthand the positive impact it has on individuals and bringing balance to the overall face alone or when combined with rhinoplasty.
The lips can be enhanced in one of two ways: through the use of a dermal filler, injectable treatments which is a common non-surgical option or with lip implants. For individuals seeking permanent results, we recommend facial lip implants as injectables are naturally absorbed by the body over time and thus provide only temporary enhancement. Implants, which are typically made from GORE-TEX® (polytetrafluoroethylene) can be used to great effect to bolster the lips.
To insert lip implants, small incisions are first made, typically on the side of the mouth. As the procedure is relatively quick and minimally invasive, most patients opt to undergo treatment with the use of local anesthetic. Once the incisions have been made, a small needle is used to insert the implant, at which point the incisions are sutured closed.
Various types of cheek implants can be used to enhance the contour and volume of the face: some implants, such as those made of GORE-TEX® (polytetrafluoroethylene), silicone, which can be removed at a later point in time should the patient change his or her mind about treatment; others, like a hydroxyapatite implant, integrate with natural tissues over time for results that look and feel completely natural. Rest assured, we can advise you of your options and educate you on the risks and benefits of each so that you can make an informed decision on which treatment would be best suited for you.
If a patient is undergoing other facial procedures, such as a face lift, cheek implants can be inserted through the incisions used for those treatments. If cheek implants are not being combined with another procedure, incisions are typically made inside of the mouth or in the lower eyelid. These incision locations provide access to the cheek area while keeping any resultant scarring hidden from view. Once the implants have been placed in the cheek pockets, the incisions are closed and allowed to heal.
