Rhinoplasty is a popular cosmetic procedure among our male patients. Rhinoplasty can improve the size, shape, and contours of the nose, as well as correct breathing and appearance issues that may have been caused by traumatic or sports injuries. Dr. David A. Sherris performs male rhinoplasty to help our Buffalo, NY patients achieve their aesthetic goals. His skill and experience safely and effectively provides patients with the results they desire, while also minimizing discomfort and the risk of complications.

Candidates for Male Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is a highly customizable cosmetic procedure that allows Dr. Sherris to address many aesthetic flaws affecting the nose. Because of this, rhinoplasty is suitable for many patients. Patients that are healthy, have realistic expectations for the results of surgery, and are at least 16 years of age (this is the typical age at which a male’s nose stops growing), are likely to be good candidates for rhinoplasty. Below are some of the imperfections that can be addressed during a rhinoplasty procedure:

The Rhinoplasty Procedure

Rhinoplasty surgery typically takes between one and two hours and is performed as an outpatient procedure. To maximize patient comfort and safety throughout surgery Dr. Sherris often chooses to perform rhinoplasty while the patient is under the effects of general anesthesia which protects the airway.

One of two techniques may be utilized for a rhinoplasty procedure: a closed rhinoplasty or an open rhinoplasty. A closed rhinoplasty procedure refers to one in which all the incisions are made on the inside of the nose, which is limiting and usually for patients who need minor changes of the nose.

An open rhinoplasty procedure involves a small incision on the underside of the columella (the skin between the nostrils). After the incisions are made, the skin over the nose will be lifted, allowing Dr. Sherris to make any necessary alterations to the underlying bones and cartilage. The skin will then be redraped and the incisions will be closed.

Rhinoplasty Recovery

During the initial stage of rhinoplasty recovery, patients will wear a splint or nasal cast on the outside of the nose and soft rubber stents on the inside of the nose. This is more comfortable for patients than nasal packing, and ensures that the nose is supported and straight while it heals. The splint or nasal cast will be worn for a week after surgery, after which time the splint, stents and sutures will also be removed.

The aesthetic results of surgery will be seen after just one week when the nasal cast is removed. The majority of swelling however is likely to persist for at least three weeks and full healing happens over the course of a year. Most patients are able to enjoy the aesthetic results of surgery once the cast is removed.
