1994-2003 Facial Plastic Surgery and Rhinology Resident Rotation
Preceptor
and primary preceptor
I was the primary facial plastic surgeon and one of four
primary rhinologists in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology at the Mayo
Clinic for my 9 years of employment. In that role I directed a mandatory resident
rotation that was focused on teaching the medical and surgical skills necessary
to cover the sections of facial plastic surgery and rhinology. Facial plastic
surgery makes up one quarter of the national board exam administered by the
American Board of Otolaryngolgogy, and rhinology is included in the general
otolaryngology quarter of the exam. During that time seven residents followed
my mentorship into facial plastic surgery fellowships, another resident into a
career in facial plastic surgery without a fellowship, and another resident
into a plastic surgery fellowship. Six of those individuals are now pursuing an
academic facial plastic surgery career at Mayo Clinic- Rochester, Mayo Clinic-
Jacksonville, Mount Sinai (NY), Baylor, University of South Florida and Georgetown respectively. Two residents have been accepted for fellowships this year, and
at least four more have expressed strong interest in applying when their time
comes. No Mayo residents followed this career path prior to my coming to Mayo Clinic.
1994-2003 Facial Plastic Surgery Core Curriculum
Director and curriculum development
Mandatory annual course for Otorhinolaryngolgy
residents; Invited for fellows in Plastic Surgery, residents in Oral and
Maxillofacial Surgery, and residents and fellows in Dermatology, at Mayo Clinic
(20-30 students). Six to eight week duration, 2 hours per week to teach the
Facial Plastic Surgery Didactic Curriculum with a mandatory exam at the
completion.
1994-2003 Rhinology Core Curriculum
Director and curriculum development
Mandatory for Otorhinolaryngolgy residents at Mayo
Clinic (20 students). Six to eight week course, 2 hours per week to teach the
Rhinology and Rhinologic Surgery Didactic Curriculum with a mandatory exam at
the completion.
1995-2003 Soft Tissue Surgery for the Medical Student
Director
and curriculum development
Annual course for the 2nd or 3rd year medical students at Mayo Medical School. I started this mandatory course
upon my arrival at Mayo Clinic. We developed a book and CD-ROM to facilitate
the learning of the basic skills necessary for anyone who sutures or does
surgical procedures. The CD-ROM has helped the students speed up their
mastering of knot tying from 3-4 hours prior to its existence to 1 hour. The
course is taught once or twice a year for 4 hours. The additional time is now
used to teach various suture techniques, tissue undermining and handling, and
local flap design and execution. The book and CD-ROM were featured in the
“Innovations in Medical Education” section of the Association of American
Medical College meeting in 2000.
1995-2003 Rhinofest
Co-Director
Combined 4-day biannual CME course with Mayo Clinic and Graz University, Graz , Austria. This is a national and international course in Rhinology and
Plastic Surgery of the Nose for 50-100 Otorhinolaryngologists and residents in
Otorhinolaryngology. I worked with the other 1 or 2 program directors
(depending on the year) to write the program, organize the facility, invite
visiting faculty, arrange for industry support, advertise, and teach the
didactic and dissection sessions.
1997-2003 Otorhinolaryngology for the Second Year Medical Student
Co-director
and curriculum development
Annual mandatory course for the 50 Mayo Medical School students. The course runs for one week, 4 hours a day and finishes with a
mandatory exam. The course highlights diseases commonly seen in each
subspecialty in Otorhinolaryngology. My co-director and I shifted from a
symptom/disease based lecture series to a subspecialty-based curriculum. We
organized the lecturers, lectured, wrote and administered the test, and
transitioned to a web-based curriculum. I have been officially commended for my
excellence in teaching by the medical students through letters of commendation
from the Dean of Medical Education multiple times.
2001-2003 Basic
Soft Tissue Surgery
Co-director
and curriculum development
Workshops
done across the country at medical schools, residency programs, and, nurse
practitioner meetings to teach soft tissue surgery. Ethicon sponsors the
workshops, and they are done for 4 hours for 25-100 participants. Institutions
that have had the course include SUNY at Buffalo, Kansas University Medical
Center, University of Tennessee at Knoxville, University of Colorado Health Sciences
at Denver, Eastern Tennessee State University Medical School, Oklahoma City
Medical Center, etc.
2002 10th Danube Symposium International Otorhinolaryngologic Congress
Scientific CommitteeCourse
for otorhinolaryngologists and residents. This was a four day long course with
didactic sessions.
2000 From Basic Diagnosis and Surgery to
Advanced Applications of Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery-27th International Scientific Meeting and 1st Combined Graz- Mayo Clinic
Workshop
Co-director
International course on sinus diseases and surgical
treatment of nasal disorders. The course has 100- 150 participants and is three
days long. The course is taught at Graz University, Graz, Austria (where endoscopic sinus surgery was invented and popularized).
2000The Nose
2000 and Beyond
Program Director
International
Rhinologic Society, American Rhinologic Society, American Academy of
Otolaryngology- Head and Neck Surgery, American Academy of Facial Plastic and
Reconstructive Surgery, and American Academy of Otolaryngologic Allergy
combined CME meeting. I chose all of the papers to be presented at the
sessions, helped organize the program, and reviewed all of the abstracts for
placement in the conference program. Over 1200 Otolaryngologists from around
the world attended the three day course.
1998Update in Otolaryngology- Head and
Neck Surgery
Co-director
Joint CME meeting
with Mayo Clinic, University of Washington, and Oregon Health Sciences Faculty.
Approximately 50 practicing Otolaryngologists attended this course in Washington State. I organized the program, invited the faculty, arranged for industry
support, chose the venue, and directed and lectured at the meeting.
1996 Current
Topics in Otorhinolaryngology
Director
This was a CME meeting at Mayo Clinic for approximately
50 participants on new topics in Otorhinolaryngology. I organized the program,
invited the faculty, arranged for industry support, directed the meeting, and
lectured.

Jens joined Mayo clinic as a Research Fellow with me and
was promoted to Research Associate in 2002. He has now (2002) joined the staff
at Mayo Clinic as an Associate Consultant and Assistant Professor in
Otorhinolaryngology. Our work together has led to numerous patents and patents
pending, countless presentations nationally and internationally, and multiple
papers. Together we have mentored more than 15 medical students and residents
in various research projects related to this work. The work has resulted in
over 3.5 million dollars in NIH grants being awarded to Mayo Clinic. An item in
the House and Senate Appropriations Committee suggested that the NIAID shift
funding toward examining the role of fungi in the pathophysiology of chronic
rhinosinusitis. The research has been featured or mentioned in multiple
articles and media outlets including The New York Times, The Wall Street
Journal, Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, Reader’s Digest, Newsweek, Der
Spiegel, Modern Maturity, Health Magazine, Bottom Line, Journal of Longevity,
Money Magazine, Ladies Home Journal, German Vogue, Florida Times Union, CNN
